Paul Sewald 2023 Player Outlook: Leader of the Powerful Mariners Pen
2 years agoFor the second consecutive season, Paul Sewald rode his fastball/slider duo to a dominant performance. Despite starting the season in a muddied committee, Sewald led the team with 20 saves. His 2.67 ERA and 2.64 xERA both set career bests, and amongst the 17 relievers with 20+ saves his .145 BAA was the lowest mark. The veteran should once again lead the team in save chances for 2023 which makes him a great value at his ~182 ADP, but some indicators such as a crazy low .158 BABIP and 30.6 GB% suggest it may not be quite as smooth as the past two years (3.88 FIP). The long term answer in Seattle is obviously Andres Munoz, and if Sewald stumbles a bit the keys could be handed to the 24 year old pretty quickly. If you want a monopoly on SEA saves, and one gnarly FrankenAce, get greedy and grab both.
