2 weeks agoTexas Rangers outfielder Willie Calhoun went 2-for-3 with a home run against the Indians Wednesday. Calhoun hit a solo homer off Indians reliever Oliver Perez in the eighth inning of the second game of the doubleheader, it was the only run Texas scored in both games combined. Calhoun is now batting .286 with a .975 slugging percentage since being recalled from Triple-A on July 26. On the season, Calhoun has a .868 OPS with nine home runs in 134 Big League at-bats and should be owned in 12-team mixed leagues and deeper. Calhoun will look to keep things rolling in a three-game series at Milwaukee this weekend.--Mike Schwarzenbach - RotoBallerSource: MLB

2 weeks agoCarolina Panthers wide receiver Curtis Samuel is "light years" ahead of where he was when he first entered the league, according to Ron Rivera. "He has taken an even bigger leap. It's exciting to watch," touted the ninth-year coach when commenting on Samuel's progression. The 22-year-old has had a semi-uneventful two seasons in the league up to this point, compiling just 609 receiving yards while accumulating seven touchdowns. Now in his third season, the Panthers are hoping that his efficient performance during training camp will translate to the field when the season kicks off in a little under a month.--Dennis Clausen - RotoBallerSource: Jeremy Bergman
2 weeks agoSan Francisco Giants outfielder Alex Dickerson (oblique) won't be ready to come off the injured list when first eligible on Sunday according to Alex Pavlovic. The initial hope when Dickerson went on the IL was he would miss the minimum 10 days, but he'll require a little more time. Dickerson had been on a tear before the injury, he is batting .415 in since the All-Star break with a 1.211 OPS. He should be owned in deeper leagues and NL-Only when he is deemed healthy enough to return to the Giants.--Mike Schwarzenbach - RotoBallerSource: NBC Sports Bay Area

2 weeks agoTexas Rangers starting pitcher Mike Minor allowed two runs, one earned, but took the loss Wednesday afternoon. Minor allowed four hits and three walks while striking out eight in his latest strong start. Minor is having a superb season with a 3.06 ERA and 156 strikeouts in 154 innings and the success looks sustainable. His swinging-strike rate of 11.7 is the second-highest of his career and he is only allowing 35.8 percent hard contact. He should be owned and started in all leagues, though he does have a tough matchup in Milwaukee this Sunday.--Mike Schwarzenbach - RotoBallerSource: MLB
2 weeks agoTampa Bay Rays starting pitcher Blake Snell (elbow) will travel with the team to Seattle and begin throwing for the first time since he underwent arthroscopic elbow surgery on July 29. Snell is not expected to return until September, but the fact he's throwing is a good sign we'll see the left-hander on the mound earlier in the month. Snell's 4.28 ERA is a far cry from his Cy Young-winning numbers of yesteryear, but he is still missing bats at an elite rate. His swinging-strike rate of 17.8 is the best in the Majors and he strikes out 12.1 batters per nine innings. Now could be a great time to make a trade offer for Snell if your team is in good shape to make the fantasy playoffs.--Mike Schwarzenbach - RotoBallerSource: Marc Topkin
2 weeks agoMinnesota Vikings tight end Irv Smith Jr. recently told ESPN's Courtney Cronin that the Vikings are getting creative with his usage in the passing game, lining him up out wide and even in the backfield on occasion. The rookie second-rounder was listed as the second tight end on the team's first unofficial depth chart, and he offers an intriguing skill set that produced 16.1 yards per catch and seven touchdowns last year at Alabama. While it's encouraging to hear that Kevin Stefanski and Gary Kubiak are utilizing Smith Jr.'s athleticism, incumbent starter Kyle Rudolph stands in his way for fantasy relevance and it's difficult to make a case for Smith Jr. in non-dynasty formats this season. Things can always change, though, so keep an eye out in the preseason. He's currently basically free in drafts, clocking in at 272 overall (TE31).--Kyle Ringstad - RotoBallerSource: Courtney Cronin - Twitter
2 weeks agoSan Francisco Giants starting pitcher Shaun Anderson was removed from his start Wednesday with a blister on his pitching hand. Manager Bruce Bochy said after the game Anderson may miss a start with the blister issue. Anderson had not been pitching well anyway having allowed four runs in the three innings and his ERA now sits at a ghastly 5.33. His FIP is almost as bad at 4.81 and his strikeout rate of 15.1 is among the lowest in baseball. He does not need to be owned in redraft leagues even if he makes his next start.--Mike Schwarzenbach - RotoBallerSource: Alex Pavlovic
2 weeks agoTexas Rangers starting pitcher Ariel Jurado allowed two runs in seven innings but got no offensive support and took the loss Wednesday. Jurado had pitched six shutout innings before a Jose Ramirez two-run-homer in the seventh inning gave Cleveland the only runs they would need on the afternoon. Despite the strong start, Jurado doesn't have much fantasy value. This start lowered his ERA to 4.74 which lines up with his .490 xFIP. He also doesn't rack up the strikeouts as his 16.9 strikeout rate is among the lowest in baseball. He's a decent streamer in AL-Only next Monday vs Toronto but can be left on waivers in most mixed leagues.--Mike Schwarzenbach - RotoBallerSource: MLB
2 weeks agoWashington Nationals third baseman Anthony Rendon should be fine after he was hit by a pitch in the toe and left Wednesday's game. Manager Dave Martinez said Rendon told him the toe got sore during the game but feels better after icing it. The Nationals are off Thursday so Rendon will have time to recover from any lingering soreness and it sounds like he'll be back in the lineup on Friday. Rendon is having a career-year slashing .308/.401/.601. Fantasy owners can breathe a sigh of relief the All-Star third baseman seems to have avoided serious injury.--Mike Schwarzenbach - RotoBallerSource: Jesse Dougherty - Washington Post

2 weeks agoThe Houston Texans signed quarterback Jordan Ta'amu on Wednesday. With A.J. McCarron (thumb) likely out for the preseason, Ta'amu is nothing more than an extra body to play in preseason games, so this move can be ignored in all season-long formats. The biggest impact comes in preseason DFS contests, as Joe Webb won't be forced to play three-plus quarters like he would have been without the signing. The former Ole Miss quarterback passed for almost 4000 yards last season and could put up decent numbers if he plays in Thursday's preseason opener.--Justin Carter - RotoBallerSource: Houston Texans
2 weeks agoSt. Louis Cardinals closer Carlos Martinez blew a save on Wednesday and took the loss. He got just one out while allowing a run on two hits. A Russell Martin two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth led to Martinez's third blown save and second loss, evening his record at 2-2. He'll take a 3.72 ERA and .250 batting average against to the mound his next time out, hoping for better results.--David A Marcillo - RotoBallerSource:
2 weeks agoSeattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson will be rested for the team's preseason opener on Thursday against the Denver Broncos, so head coach Pete Carroll has tabbed Geno Smith as his starter for the exhibition opener. It's customary for many veterans to rest for the meaningless dress rehearsal, and 'DangeRuss' is not an exception. When the games count for real, Wilson is a bona fide QB1 in all fantasy formats heading into 2019. He passed for 3,448 yards with a career-high 35 touchdowns and just seven interceptions in 2018 while running for 376 yards across 16 starts. He has never missed a game in seven NFL seasons, too, so fantasy owners love his durability.--Daniel E. Dobish - RotoBallerSource: The Seattle Times - Bob Condotta
2 weeks agoSt. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Jack Flaherty stayed hot on Wednesday, tossing seven scoreless innings while striking out 10. He allowed only four hits and one walk in the impressive 97-pitch effort. Flaherty ended up with a no decision when the Cardinals lost in the bottom of the ninth, but he did earn a quality start and lowered his ERA to 3.72. He's been one of the best pitchers in baseball over his last few starts.--David A Marcillo - RotoBallerSource:
2 weeks agoCleveland Indians third baseman Jose Ramirez provided all the offense in Game 1 of Wednesday's double header. He went 1-for-2 with a walk and a two-run home run. Ramirez's seventh inning home run was the only scoring in the game, as Cleveland would win 2-0 over the Texas Rangers. Heading into Game 2, Ramirez is slashing .243/.316/.425 with 15 home runs.--David A Marcillo - RotoBallerSource:

2 weeks agoPittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will be rested for the preseason opener Friday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, so head coach Mike Tomlin has tabbed Joshua Dobbs as his starter. Mason Rudolph is expected to follow Dobbs, as Big Ben is rested like most veterans for the exhibition opener. When healthy, Big Ben will be a borderline low-end QB1 or QB2 in most fantasy leagues of 12 or more teams as he adjusts to life without star wide receiver Antonio Brown (Raiders).--Daniel E. Dobish - RotoBallerSource: - Bob Labriola
2 weeks agoNew York Yankees outfielder Giancarlo Stanton (knee) has begun throwing and hitting off a tee according to Lindsey Adler. Stanton has also been running on an anti-gravity treadmill as he attempts to work his way back from a PCL strain in his knee. There is no word on when Stanton will return to the field but this is a positive sign for Stanton and his fantasy owners hoping the star slugger will be back for the stretch run and fantasy playoffs.--Mike Schwarzenbach - RotoBallerSource: Lindsey Adler - The Athletic

2 weeks agoCleveland Indians closer Brad Hand was excellent in the ninth inning of Game 1 of Wednesday's double header. He closed out the Rangers with a perfect 1-2-3 inning in which he struck out all three batters he faced. Hand needed just 13 pitches to lock down a 2-0 win for Cleveland. He sports a 2.35 ERA and 28 saves so far this season.--David A Marcillo - RotoBallerSource:
2 weeks agoSan Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa (ankle) and cornerback Jason Verrett (ankle, Achilles) will undergo MRIs after suffering ankle injuries on Wednesday. Head coach Kyle Shanahan expected Bosa, the 2019 second overall pick, to be “alright” but did not have comment on Verrett. Depending on the results, a significant injury for Bosa would negatively impact his IDP candidacy and impair the Niners defensive unit. Meanwhile, Verrett had been competing with Ahkello Witherspoon for a starter job opposite of Richard Sherman. While he’s flashed all-pro talent during his five-year career, Verrett has been unable to stay healthy. He missed all of 2018 with a torn Achilles. While cornerbacks aren’t typically ideal fantasy IDPs, it’s another tough break for Verrett.--Andrew Le - RotoBallerSource: Twitter - Rob Lowder
2 weeks agoCleveland Indians starting pitcher Zach Plesac was excellent in Game 1 of Wednesday's double header, tossing six scoreless innings. He allowed just five hits and two walks while striking out seven. Plesac earned a quality start, but did not figure into the decision as Cleveland would score only after Plesac left the game. He'll take a solid 3.13 ERA into his next start and has certainly developed some mixed-league appeal.--David A Marcillo - RotoBallerSource:

2 weeks agoNew York Jets defensive end Leonard Williams (hip) is missing from practice this week due to a hip injury, although his injury is not considered serious. Free safety Marcus Maye (shoulder) remains on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list, and head coach Adam Gase was unable to offer no updates on Maye's timetable. He is recovering from shoulder surgery, and Gase said a nerve issue is factoring into the delay. "We'd like to get him back before the season starts, get him out there and make sure everything's good to go," Gase said. The Jets are a low-end No. 2 DST or in-season streaming option in most fantasy formats.--Daniel E. Dobish - RotoBallerSource: New York Post - Zach Braziller
2 weeks agoIt’s been business as usual for San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle in training camp. Kittle has built a solid rapport with starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo including two touchdown grabs in Wednesday’s practice. The third-year pro emerged as a superstar in 2018 by leading the team in targets (136), catches (88) and yards (1,377) to accompany five touchdowns. Kittle proved himself quarterback-proof last season as he mostly worked with backup signal callers after Garoppolo’s injury. With his big-play ability in a top-heavy position, Kittle is a solid bet at his ADP of 23.--Andrew Le - RotoBallerSource: Niners Nation - Rob Lowder
2 weeks agoNew York Jets wide receiver Quincy Enunwa (groin) suffered a groin injury during Tuesday's workout, although the club does not feel as if the injury is serious. In fact, Enunwa tried to continue, but the team decided to take the conservative approach. "I think we're (taking precautions) with him right now," head coach Adam Gase said. "It's just we don't want to take any chances letting him go out there and hurt himself even more. He was doing some stuff in the AlterG inside. I think he'll be all right next week." When healthy, Enunwa falls into the WR5 neighborhood in most fantasy leagues of 12 or more teams.--Daniel E. Dobish - RotoBallerSource: New York Post - Zach Braziller
2 weeks agoKansas City Chiefs running back Carlos Hyde has reportedly taken advantage of his opportunities in camp, according to head coach Andy Reid. Lead back Damien Williams (hamstring) was sidelined for 10 days, so Hyde received some extra work. Williams remains the starter, but Hyde does have some fantasy value heading into the season. There should be chances for him to vulture his way into some value even with limited carries.--Andy Webb - RotoBallerSource:
2 weeks agoJacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Chris Conley has been impressive during offseason workouts and into training camp. He stood out during joint practices with the Baltimore Ravens, and he has reportedly jelled nicely with quarterback Nick Foles, whom he worked with briefly with the Kansas City Chiefs. Wide receivers coach Keenan McCardell stresses for the receivers to be ready for the deep ball at all times, and that's where Conley could make his biggest impact. However, as long as Dede Westbrook, Marqise Lee, Keelan Cole and Terrelle Pryor remain healthy, Conley will be fighting for a small piece of the pie. He remains a late-round target only in the deepest of fantasy leagues at the moment.--Daniel E. Dobish - RotoBallerSource: The Athletic - Phillip Heilman
2 weeks agoKansas City Chiefs running back Damien Williams (hamstring) returned to practice on Wednesday. He missed 10 days due to a hamstring issue, but appears ready to go now. Williams will be good to go for Week 1, assuming that he doesn't suffer any setbacks. He'll likely be a back-end RB1 at the beginning of the season.--Andy Webb - RotoBallerSource: Brooke Pryor
2 weeks agoSan Francisco 49ers quarterback C.J. Beathard is listed as the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart. With starter Jimmy Garoppolo ruled out for the first preseason game, Beathard will likely get the start as he fights to make the team. The third-year pro has been mediocre in 13 career games with a 74.6 QB rating and is locked in a battle with Nick Mullens for primary backup duties. Initial reports suggest the team could kept just two signal callers on the 53-man roster. Mullens showed in 2018 he could be a competent NFL player so Beathard has work to do. Even if Beathard or Mullens have a strong game this Saturday, neither are fantasy-relevant.--Andrew Le - RotoBallerSource: Niner Noise - Peter Panacy
2 weeks agoSeattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll said on Wednesday that veteran tight end Ed Dickson (knee) underwent knee surgery and the team is hopeful he'll only need a four- or five-week recovery period. The timetable will put his availability for the regular-season opener in question. With Will Dissly also banged up, it appears Nick Vannett and Jacob Hollister will be doing the heavy lifting during preseason games, and they could factor in prominently in Week 1.--Daniel E. Dobish - RotoBallerSource: The Seattle Times - Bob Condotta
2 weeks agoBaltimore Orioles starting pitcher John Means will be limited during Wednesday's game against the New York Yankees, according to manager Brandon Hyde. Means just came off the 10-day injured list after missing two weeks due to left shoulder inflammation. The Orioles will likely have him on a pitch count for this contest. Fantasy owners may not want to start Means for this game. DFS players should probably go ahead and avoid Means here because it's unclear how long he'll be in the game.--Andy Webb - RotoBallerSource: Rich Dubroff
2 weeks agoNew England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman (thumb) watched the beginning of practice on Wednesday, and he was also able to play catch with running back Rex Burkhead while using his right hand. He continues to wear a splint on his healing broken left thumb. He is on the mend and expected to be ready for the start of the regular season barring any setbacks. At this point he remains solidly in the mix for a spot as a WR2 in most fantasy formats, especially those rewarding points per reception (PPR).--Daniel E. Dobish - RotoBallerSource: Boston Herald - Karen Guregian
2 weeks agoAtlanta Braves outfielder Austin Riley (knee) has been placed on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday. Riley suffered a knee issue on Tuesday, so he'll be sidelined with an apparent knee ligament injury. He got off to a hot start with Atlanta, but has been slumping with the bat lately. It's unclear at the moment how much time Riley is expected to miss. Fantasy owners will need to wait and see the results after the tests are completed.--Andy Webb - RotoBallerSource: Mark Bowman
