Nolan Gorman 2022 Outlook: Power Bat With More Mature Approach
3 years agoThe 19th-overall selection from the 2018 amateur draft out of high school, Gorman was considered to be the second coming of Joey Gallo. His plus-plus raw power was evident from a young age — and he set the prospect world on fire when he slugged 17 homers in 63 games during his debut — but the young Cardinals prospect has been a more competent hitter than expected in pro ball. After sitting out the 2020 season due to the pandemic, Gorman showed some early rust in 2021 but the Cardinals pushed him aggressively through the system and he made strides as the year went on. He finished the year with 25 home runs while splitting the year between Double-A and Triple-A and at the age of 21 he was very young compared to his level of competition. Although his wRC+ dipped from 129 to 106 between the two levels, Gorman showed some promising trends at the higher level — including a dip in his strikeout rate from 27% to 19%. One of the biggest changes to the prospect's game in 2021 came from shifting his attention on defense from third base to second base. The change in position could help his fantasy value in 2022 — especially if he spends enough time at the hot corner with the Cardinals to have dual position eligibility. With an ADP in the 400s, most fantasy owners have yet to buy into Gorman as a potentially key contributor in 2022.
