Noah Syndergaard 2019 Outlook: Reliable Ace or Injury Prone Headache?
6 years agoEven though Noah Syndergaard was only able to pitch in seven games during the 2017 season, he was still considered one of the best starting pitchers by fantasy baseball owners in 2018 drafts and the ADP shows it. Syndergaard checked in with an ADP of 27 last season and was the sixth overall starting pitcher taken in drafts. Syndergaard barely checked into the top-100 by seasons end and even though his season was an overall success, should we be worried in 2019? Syndergaard pitched well in 2018 but he took a step back, as his WHIP, BB/9 and K/9 were all career highs and his ERA was over 3.00 for the first time since his rookie season. His durability continues to be a question mark as well. Syndergaard has never reached 200 innings in a season and missed a chunk of the season again in 2018. If you are going to draft a pitcher in the first three rounds, you need to find someone that is going to be more reliable. If you are drafting Syndergaard to be your ace, he could prove to be a headache, especially if he misses time again. Syndergaard warrants a look as one of the top-10 pitchers taken in 2019 drafts based on his upside alone. If you want to draft a pitcher high though, draft one earlier and select a proven, reliable vet who can anchor your team. Don’t leave your ace up to chance.
