Myles Gaskin 2021 Outlook: Primed for Big Role in Revamped Offense
4 years agoA seventh-round pick in 2019, Myles Gaskin finds himself in a place few expected entering 2021 - the clear lead back in Miami's offense. Before 2020, the Dolphins signed Jordan Howard and Matt Breida to vie for touches but injuries and ineffectiveness allowed Gaskin to take the reins as early as Week 3 when he saw 22 carries and five targets. He started five games until landing on injured reserve and then found himself on the COVID list right after returning. As a result, the season-long numbers aren't overwhelming but he averaged 67.9 total yards per game. He was adequate as a runner, averaging 2.0 yards after contact per rush and a 17.6% broken tackle rate. He never overwhelmed but he clearly made enough of an impression to retain the job. Many expected Miami to select a running back fairly early in the NFL Draft but they nearly passed altogether on the position, waiting until round seven again to take Gerrid Doaks out of Cincinnati. Although Doaks or Salvon Ahmed could see work on the occasional series, the promise of consistent touches is enough to make Gaskin a fantasy RB2 for now. Veteran Malcolm Brown will play the role of short-yardage back and is very likely to eat into his touchdown share so Gaskin will be more valuable in PPR leagues than non-ppr leagues. His involvement as a pass-catcher in a relatively conservative offense offers a decently high floor even if his ceiling isn't terribly high.
