Matt Wieters Disappoints In His First Season With Nationals
7 years agoMatt Wieters did not return anywhere near the value that the Nationals were expecting when they signed the catcher to a two-year deal. Wieters had a -0.2 WAR in the 123 games he played in 2017. Even in a terribly shallow position like catching, Wieters was near the bottom of virtually every indicator. There’s no shortage of ugly 2017 stats for Wieters. He had an ISO of .118, his OBP was .288 and his wRC+ was a measly 62. Does this make Wieters a likely bounceback candidate? Possibly. The Nationals have a pretty good rookie in Pedro Severino and are in trade talks with the Marlins to reel in J.T. Realmuto. Unless Wieters comes roaring out of the gate, the contending Nats may switch him out pretty quickly.
