Martin Truex Jr. Can’t Afford A Bad Finish At Watkins Glen
3 months agoIf Martin Truex Jr. wants to compete for the championship in his final full-time Cup Series season, he likely can't afford to have a bad race at Watkins Glen this weekend, considering he is 19 points below the cut line with just two races left in the first round of the playoffs. Truex also enters the Go Bowling at The Glen race weekend on an absolutely abysmal run of finishes, as the Joe Gibbs Racing driver has finished 24th or worse in each of the last six Cup Series races. He has also finished outside of the top 20 in 10 of the last 13 overall. Truex could definitely turn things around at Watkins Glen, though. He's a previous winner at the track (2017) and has posted seven top-five finishes in 17 career starts at the track. Looking back at the Sonoma race earlier this year (another road course), Truex was in position to finish second in that race but ran out of fuel and ended up finishing 27th. For this weekend's race, MTJ looked pretty strong in practice on Saturday and qualified second. He should be a contender for the win.
