Marcus Stroman Set To Lead Blue Jays Rotation
7 years agoToronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Marcus Stroman may not be the best option in the world to lead an MLB team’s rotation, but for fantasy purposes, owners should be more than happy landing him as a low-end SP2/high-end SP3. Stroman is coming off a 2017 season where we saw him pretty much be the same Stroman as always, with improvement in some categories and decline in others. For example, his 3.09 ERA was a career-best for a full season, and 7.34 K/9 was his best since 2014. Yet, his 2.78 BB/9, 2.65 K/BB, and 0.94 HR/9 were all career-worsts. There’s no doubt that the Stroman carries a fair degree of risk on a start-to-start basis pitching in the American League East, with a home ballpark that’s more than generous to all hitters. However, you know exactly where his numbers will be at the end of the season, and that’s worth something to be a mid-rotation starter in your fantasy rotation. An added wrinkle in evaluating Stroman is the fact that he will miss Opening Day with a shoulder injury. It is not an injury that will keep him out of the rotation for an extended period, but it is something that could linger and that fantasy owners need to be mindful of leading into drafts.
