Luke Schoonmaker 2023 NFL Outlook: Rookie Competing For The Cowboys Primary TE Job
2 years agoMichigan tight end Luke Schoonmaker (foot) was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys 58th overall in the 2023 NFL Draft. He has battled a plantar fascia issue this offseason. But the rookie is finally healthy enough to participate in training camp. Schoonmaker finished his college career with just 54 catches for 637 yards and seven touchdowns in three seasons. In 2022, he had 35 catches for 418 yards and three touchdowns. Schoonmaker could have produced better college numbers. But remember, he was on a Michigan squad that passed the ball 39.21% of the time (120th in FBS). The athleticism is there from the 24-year-old, and that alone could help him win the TE1 job in Dallas. He had a 9.86 relative athletic score (RAS) out of 10 and placed elite times in the broad jump, 40-yard dash, and shuttle run. He'll compete against second-year tight ends Jake Ferguson and Peyton Hendershot for the TE1 job. Schoonmaker has the size and tools at 6-foot-5, 250 pounds to make noise over his career. But don't count on the rookie being fantasy-relevant in his rookie season. With Ferguson and Henderson also in the mix, Schoonmaker should only be drafted in deeper tight end premium leagues.
