Luis Robert 2020 Outlook: Volatile Hitter but 30-Steal Potential
5 years agoThe rebuilding White Sox brought in a number of veteran players this past winter but none of the moves blocked the impending arrival of the top outfield prospect in the game, Luis Robert. The Cuban-born athlete has other-worldly bat speed which helps him drive the ball even when he doesn’t fully square it up. When he does, though, the ball goes a long way. Along with the natural power, Robert also has the blazing speed necessary to be a 30-30 (HR-SB) threat in the Major Leagues. He won’t walk much so his value will take a bit of a hit in on-base leagues. He’ll also have a lot of swing-and-miss to his game, especially early on in his career, so be prepared for some prolonged cold stretches (which will be offset by scorching hot streaks). Players who strike out a lot tend to have lower batting averages but this rookie’s speed and hard-hit ball tendencies should allow him to post higher-than-average BABIPs. Robert has a little more boom-or-bust risk than your typical top prospect but his ceiling is arguably higher than any other prospect slated to make their debut this season (with the possible exception of the Rays’ Wander Franco). And the White Sox are clearly all-in after providing him a six-year contract worth at least $50 million.
