LeSean McCoy 2019 Outlook: Shade for Shady
5 years agoThere is no disputing the fact LeSean McCoy had a terrible 2018 season. The six-time pro bowler and two times All-Pro didn’t even beat out his own quarterback in rush yards. This despite playing in more games. Oh, and actually being the starting running back. On 161 carries in 2018 McCoy finished with only 514 yards and 3 touchdowns compared to Josh Allen who had 631 yards and eight touchdowns on only 89 rushes. This is not great for either the team or for Shady.
After his release from Buffalo on Saturday, McCoy will have a chance to show what he has left in Kansas City. He will not be the starter here. Andy Reid and the Chiefs have already stated this will be Damien Williams. But with his comfort level with Reid and the offensive familiarity, McCoy adds a ton of insurance which was not had with Carlos Hyde. If McCoy is called on to take over, the production level will not take a dip and although he is not as important as other handcuffs like Tony Pollard or Chase Edmonds, he is by far the best handcuff in the NFL.
This value also makes him a value in drafts. Currently going in the ninth-round this number should drop as he is seen as going from a starter to a backup. He is still a good pick up even as a backup. Williams is not solidified as the entrenched starter. If he struggles for a few weeks there is a chance Shady takes the reigns and runs with it. They like Darwin Thompson in Kansas City but this move hurts him more than Williams.
No. It will not be a committee back situation. But McCoy should see five to eight touches per game. In this offense. And with the upside he has should Damien Williams go down? He is certainly worth a pick as an RB4/5 to finish out your rosters.
