Leody Taveras 2021 Fantasy Outlook: Speedy Outfielder With Upside
4 years agoTexas Rangers outfielder Leody Taveras was a surprise call-up for the Rangers last year and finished his debut season with a respectable .227/.308/.395 slash line in 33 games. His biggest fantasy asset is speed, which was on full display when he converted all eight stolen base attempts while also hitting four homers. Taveras spent the vast majority of his time as the Rangers leadoff hitter, which led to him scoring 20 runs with six RBI. Given the fact that he'd never reached higher than the Double-A level (and only played 65 games there) prior to his call-up, his 32.1% strikeout rate last year won't come as a surprise. Taveras did also manage a decent 10.4% walk rate. Given that the Rangers are unlikely to be playing for much in 2021, there's a decent chance that they'll continue having Taveras bat leadoff to utilize his speed on the bases, which was in the 96th percentile last year. That should also continue to lead to a good amount of runs scored. Taveras does possess a bit of power, and double-digit homers in 2021 should be achievable. The projections all have Taveras with a batting average between .240-.250 -- which won't be a big drain for fantasy teams -- with 25-plus stolen base potential in the leadoff spot. With an ADP of around 202, Taveras should be a key contributor of stolen bases and runs.
