Kenley Jansen 2022 Player Outlook: A Reliable Saves Source for 2022
3 years agoAfter piling up 350 career saves for the Dodgers, Kenley Jansen finds himself manning the ninth for a new ballclub in 2022, inking a one-year deal with Atlanta Braves to be their primary closer. Jansen is coming off one of his best seasons in recent years, notching 38 saves and posting a 2.22 ERA in 2021 for LA. This was more than good fortune and guile as well, as Jansen's average fastball velocity rose to 93.9 MPH last season. The velocity increase signifies a reversal of troubling trend for Jansen, who saw his fastball velocity tumble over the past couple of seasons. Not only has Jansen rediscovered that killer cut-fastball, but he's begun incorporating a slider more frequently at this stage of his career. Jansen threw his slider a career-high 15.4% of the time in 2021, and opponents his just .093 with a .209 SLG and .150 wOBA against the pitch. Jansen was a Statcast superstar in 2021 as well. Altogether, opponents had a .180 xBA, .260 xwOBA, and 84 MPH average exit velocity off Jansen last year. As one of the few closers with defined, guaranteed role Jansen is easily top-8 at the position, and after signing with Atlanta fantasy managers should feel confident drafting him as a saves source. His current NFBC ADP of 94 is sure to rise following the news of his signing, but he is worthy of that price tag given the current closer landscape.
