Jose Martinez Hopes to Build On a Surprising 2017
7 years agoSt. Louis Cardinals outfielder/first baseman Jose Martinez is hoping to build on a strong rookie season. Last year, Martinez slashed .309/.379/.518 with 14 home runs and 46 RBI in 106 games. He reportedly played a lot of first base in winter ball, but there isn't really a position for him in the Cardinals infield right now. Unless one of Matt Carpenter or Jedd Gyorko get sent to the bench, Martinez will open the season as the fourth outfielder and the backup first baseman. He has the potential to put up strong numbers as he did in 2017, so he's worth keeping an eye on in case an injury to another player opens up playing time in 2018.
