Indianapolis Colts D/ST 2019 Outlook: Keep Up With the Offense
6 years agoUsually, you say to keep up with the Jones’. In this case, the Jones’ suck and you need to keep up with the Peyton’s and McVay’s.
This is tough to do, and no defense can do it. But the Indianapolis defense of 2019 may have as good a chance as any. Not to mention they also have an offense who if not matching the elite offenses is very close. In a way, this also hinders the defense as they will spend more time on the field in pass situations making it hard to think they will be at the level of a Jacksonville or Buffalo. The offenses in these cities are lacking making their defense not have to face as many pass-all-the-time game plans.
The Colts have perhaps the best young defensive player in the NFL in linebacker Darius Leonard. A second-round pick last season he was named the defensive rookie of the year and was also named as a first-team All-Pro. Add to that the signing of Justin Houston, to add veteran leadership, and the defense is taking a major step forward over the laughing stock they were only a few short years ago.
If you get points for not giving up points on defense this is not going to be a team for you. But if you don’t get penalized for this stat and you want a team with an improved secondary and front seven the Colts are it.
When looking for them in drafts they fall directly after the top tier of four or five defenses which everyone will try to get. The likes of Jacksonville, Minnesota, Philadelphia and of course Chicago are that good. However, Indianapolis is right there, as the next best option for you.
