4 years agoNew York Yankees shortstop Gleyber Torres was a big letdown in 2020. He managed to hit just three home runs over 42 games, slashing .243/.356/.368 along the way. It was an extremely surprising follow-up to his 38 home run campaign in 2019, when he appeared to be emerging as one of the league's top power hitters. Instead, we saw his barrel-rate drop from 10.1% in 2019 to just 3.7% in 2020 and his home run to fly ball rate fell from 21.5% in 2019 to 7.1% last year. Despite his massive power dropoff, he made positive strides in his plate discipline, lowering his strikeout rate from 21.4% in 2019 to 17.5% in 2020 and raising his walk rate from 7.9% in 2019 to 13.8% in 2020. The Yankees were plagued by injuries last year and the constant shuffling of the lineup may have had a negative effect on Torres' game, reducing his support system and allowing opposing pitchers to throw away from him. Torres turned 24 this offseason and he's a year removed from being targeted as a top-30 pick. Now, you can get him on the outskirts of the top-75, where he's a fantastic value. Last year he showed what his downside risk is, but his upside potential is an elite power hitter and he's certainly worth taking a chance on in the seventh round or even a bit earlier.
