Gavin Lux 2022 Outlook: Shine Gone from Former Top Prospect
3 years agoLos Angeles Dodgers second baseman Gavin Lux is a former first-round pick and top prospect who was expected to claim a starting job in 2021 after disappointing in a shortened 202 season. It didn't turn out that way. Amid a pair of IL stints, Lux was thoroughly mediocre in batting .242 and slugging .364 with seven home runs and four steals in 335 at-bats. He also produced a disappointing .303 wOBA. That prompted the Dodgers to acquire Trea Turner and option Lux at one point in late August because he had lost playing time. He finished strong in September, hitting .367 with a 7-8 K-BB in 49 AB in September but many questions remain about his productivity in the bigs.
Corey Seager moved on through free agency but Turner remains and Chris Taylor was re-upped to a big contract, so Lux is still on the outside looking in for playing time. The 24-year-old has the tools at his disposal but will need to have a strong spring and show consistency before being trusted by the organization or fantasy managers. He shouldn't be counted on as a starter even in an MI slot, but his potential makes for an interesting late-round flier. Just be ready to cut bait if he struggles early again.
