Gary Sanchez Claimed Off Waivers By Padres
2 years agoThe San Diego Padres have claimed veteran catcher Gary Sanchez off waivers from the New York Mets after he was designated for assignment last Thursday. The former Yankees backstop made just seven trips to the plate for the Mets, going 1-for-17 with an RBI in that time. It's been a rough stretch for a player who burst onto the scene with 20 home runs in just 53 games as a rookie in the 2016 season. Sanchez hit just .205 with 16 home runs and a .659 OPS with the Twins last season before struggling to find a home on the open market this winter. He was signed by the Giants but didn't appear in a big-league game before eventually landing with the Mets for three game appearances. He'll get an opportunity to contribute for a Padres team that ranks dead last with a .218 wOBA from their catchers this season.
