Franklin Barreto Has Competition Coming Into 2018
7 years agoThe main piece that was brought back in the Josh Donaldson deal, shortstop Franklin Barreto made his debut for the Oakland Athletics in 2016. Over 71 at-bats for the big league club, Barreto struggled hitting .197 with two home runs. On the bright side, Barretto hit a career-high 15 home runs with 15 stolen bases in Triple-A. His stolen bases numbers went down, but it shouldn't be much to be concerned about as he was counted more on for his bat in the middle of the lineup versus other stops in his minor league career. Still just 21-years-old, Barreto has a chance to make the opening day roster but will have to beat out veterans Marcus Semien and Jed Lowrie who will likely start up the middle for the A's. Barreto should definitely get a chance at some point this season but it may make the most sense for the A's to give him everyday at-bats in the minor leagues before he forces their hand. Barreto's age, power, speed, and position make him a very attractive option in keeper and dynasty leagues where he is best suited. Should he earn everyday playing time he should be across league.
