Drew Smyly Making Phillies Debut Sunday
Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Drew Smyly will make his first start with the team Sunday at the Pirates. Reliever Fernando Salas has been designated for assignment to clear a roster spot for the new signing. Smyly was having a brutal season with Texas before being designated for assignment. He was picked up by the Brewers on a minor league deal he opted out of Thursday allowing the Phillies to sign the 30-year-old lefty. Smyly had an 8.42 ERA with Texas and an 8.06 FIP to match it. Smyly had a below-average 20.6 percent strikeout rate and was allowing over 50 percent hard contact. He'd been a usable fantasy option in the past before Tommy John surgery in 2017, but this year is nothing more than a name to be aware of in NL-Only or very deep leagues in case he makes a few decent starts.
