Drew Gilbert 2024 Player Outlook: Substantial Big-League Reps Unlikely In 2024
11 months agoNew York Mets outfielder prospect Drew Gilbert had something click following his inclusion in a trade that saw Justin Verlander re-join the Houston Astros following an unsuccessful stint with the Mets. The 23-year-old hit .241 with six home runs and six stolen bases in 60 games with the Astros' Double-A affiliate before erupting for a .325 average alongside six HR, two SB, and a .984 OPS across 35 games with Double-A Binghamton. Add in a 12.3% BB% with Binghamton and his numbers seemingly scream promotion. At the same time, Gilbert posted an unsustainable .378 BABIP in the Mets system and still has just 119 games and 522 minor-league plate appearances under his belt, roughly half of what it usually takes to get a big-league look. The Mets' heavy investments into their big-league roster and inherent win-now mentality mean they're unlikely to hand the center-field reigns to a rookie following a successful 35-game stint at Double-A. He doesn't project to hit for a ton of power given his 5-foot-9 frame but he does offer speed and plenty of athleticism that could see him push for a late-season promotion if all goes well in 2024. He should be left off the fantasy radar in redraft leagues while dynasty managers could consider him around his 736.52 ADP if they believe in his hit tool and speed.
