Drew Butera Is Now Somewhat Fantasy Relevant
7 years agoKansas City Royals backup catcher Drew Butera has just been vaulted into the realm of short-term fantasy relevance. Starting catcher Salvador Perez was taken out by a mysterious masked suitcase/step combo, and the resulting torn MCL will leave him on the sidelines for four to six weeks to open the season. Thirty-three-year-old Butera will be shoved into the starting role until summer, and thus his skills will be needed in deep two-catcher leagues. He meets all the major requirements, such as being a warm body and seeing the field of play regularly, but fantasy owners shouldn't expect much in the way of actual performance from him. He had a shockingly good 2016 season that included a .285 batting average over 123 at-bats, but that was almost assuredly a fluke, as he's never hit nearly that well in any other year. With that said, those who are grabbing catchers from the waiver wire can't be too picky, so maybe Butera can provide a whiff of value over the next two months.
