David Montgomery 2022 Player Outlook – The Main Man in a Miserable Offense
3 years agoChicago's top tailback is an every-down workhorse when he is in uniform. Backup Khalil Herbert filled in admirably last year during a month-long stretch when Montgomery was sidelined, racking up 344 rushing yards over four games. Once Montgomery returned, however, Herbert was sent to Siberia and only received 18 rushing attempts over the final eight games of the season. Montgomery is a between-the-tackles banger who stays on the field inside the red zone (21 rushing TD in three seasons) and on passing downs (96 receptions over last two years), which is rare for running backs in the NFL these days. What Montgomery needs to succeed in 2022 is more help from his friends. Chicago's 30th-ranked "passing attack" was woeful last year and did little to keep defenses from crowding the line and keying on Montgomery. The Bears' pass catcher acquisitions will not inspire confidence from fantasy managers (David Moore? Byron Pringle? James O' Shaughnessy?), so the pressure is on franchise quarterback Justin Fields to leap three levels in his development while learning a new offense under the direction of a new coaching staff. If Montgomery remains healthy and remains the centerpiece of Chicago's offense, he could pile up 1,500 combined yards and 10 touchdowns like he did in 2020. If the new regime decides to utilize Herbert more and/or Fields has another year as a subpar passer, then Montgomery's fantasy value will take a hit and he will not be a sure RB1 for fantasy managers in 2022.
