Darren Waller 2020 Outlook: Can Waller Sustain His 2019 Pace?
5 years agoLas Vegas Raiders tight end Darren Waller seemed to come out of nowhere in 2019. Entering last season, Waller had played in 22 games, grabbing 18 passes for 178 yards and two touchdowns. But in 2019, Waller got the chance to be the starting tight end for the Raiders, which led to him breaking out on a team that didn’t have a ton of reliable receiving options. Waller was a monster. He was targeted 117 times, catching 90 of them for 1145 yards and three touchdowns. Quarterback Derek Carr became a big fan of Waller and of his ability to run after the catch, as he finished with 570 YAC. The biggest question now is how Waller sustains that pace on a team that’s added some dangerous young receiving talent, including using their first round pick on Alabama wide receiver Henry Ruggs III. There might not be as many targets to go around for Waller this season, making his quest to finish as a top-five fantasy tight end for the second year in a row a difficult one. It’s not impossible though, and even if Waller sees 20 fewer targets, he’s still going to be a big part of this team’s offensive attack, especially in the short and medium passing game, while Ruggs will likely be the field-stretching guy. Waller’s floor — if healthy — is still in the top 10 at the position, so don’t worry too much. He should be drafted just outside the top 50 overall.
