Darius Slayton 2021 Outlook: The Poor Man's Kenny Golladay
3 years agoDarius Slayton was one of the biggest disappointments of the 2020 fantasy football season. In 2019, the fifth-round rookie exploded onto the scene and led all Giants wideouts in snaps (65.76%) on his way to 48 receptions for 740 yards (15.4 ypr) and an impressive eight touchdowns. He went into last season as a breakout candidate and even had some believing that he was the next star wideout for the Giants. However, 2020 had different plans. Slayton took a monster step back last year, finishing with 50 receptions for 751 yards (15.0 ypr) and only three touchdowns, two of which he scored in Week 1. Maybe the defense's number one cornerbacks were too much for him to handle, or maybe his rookie season was an outlier performance and he simply came back down to Earth. Whatever the reason, the Giants made it clear that they did not trust Slayton to be the number one receiver when they signed Kenny Golladay to the largest wide receiver contract of the offseason. The club also drafted Kadarius Toney in the first round and signed John Ross as a free agent. Slayton is a deep-threat receiver with above-average jump-ball skills, but the problem is Golladay does everything that Slayton does, only much better. The 50/50 balls on the outside are going to go to Golladay, as will the deep-shots into the end-zone, and Slayton is likely to only be used as a last-resort for quarterback Daniel Jones. At best, the big-play receiver out of Auburn will be fourth in the target pecking order behind Golladay, Sterling Shepard, tight end Evan Engram, and running back Saquon Barkley, and he may even fall behind the rookie Toney as the season moves on. Slayton is best left undrafted in redraft leagues and can be scooped up off the waiver wire should something happen to Golladay.
