Corey Seager 2019 Outlook: Health Issues Disguise Quality
6 years agoLos Angeles Dodgers shortstop Corey Seager has been trending in the wrong direction due to health, and it is creating a buying opportunity. Seager only managed 115 plate appearances in 2018 in which he hit two homers with 13 RBI and a .267 batting average. The stats aren’t really relevant, as Seager wasn’t playing at full strength. His season ended abruptly in early May with news of a Tommy John surgery. While recovering from TJ, Seager also underwent hip surgery for the pain he dealt with since the second half of 2017. The numbers bear this out with only one homer in August and three in September of 2017, a month in which he finished with a .210 AVG Now fully healthy, Seager’s Rookie of the Year performance of 2016 should be viewed as the floor. His career averages in batting average (.302), HR/FB (17%), and hard-hit rate (42%) rival that of many elite players. It wouldn’t be surprising if he finishes 2019 with a .300 batting average and 30 bombs. Just keep in mind that stolen bases have never been a part of his game. In 2019, Seager has dropped to the 11th ranked shortstop due to an influx of talent at the position, as well as his lost season in 2018. Seager might be a forgotten man, but an ADP of 83 places him in the seventh round, which is a value that should be jumped on.
