Cody Bellinger Looks To Build Upon Historic Season
Cody Bellinger had a rookie season for the ages. The unanimous National League Rookie of the Year stormed the fantasy landscape and likely won many leagues for owners who had the foresight to stash him. Not bad for a guy who couldn’t even drink legally when the season started. Despite not being called up until April 25th, Bellinger delivered a wOBA of .380 and a wRC+ of 138 seemingly with little effort. His calling card is power, as evidenced by the 39 home runs he mashed and a .315 ISO. He offers positional flexibility because you can slot him as your 1B or in the OF. The biggest hole in his profile is the very thing that was exposed in the playoffs. The 6’4” youngster has a very long, albeit quick, swing. As a result, pitchers are able to drop that back foot curve, as the Astros did in the World Series and strike him out regularly. Bellinger was basically embarrassed in his 29 World Series plate appearances, striking out 17 times. He needs to work on that and luckily for him (and his owners), time is on his side. Expect some regression now that pitchers have figured him out, but he looks to be a star for the foreseeable future.
