CC Sabathia Still Going Strong
7 years agoLeft-hander CC Sabathia completed his 17th professional season last year, his ninth with with the New York Yankees. The veteran made 27 starts, tossing 148 innings and posting a 14-5 record with a 3.69 ERA. The ERA was his lowest in five seasons, while the win total was his most in four. Once again, however, Sabathia was plagued by injuries, spending time on the Disabled List with a hamstring injury and knee injury. Regardless, the 37-year-old was quite dependable once again, going 2-0 with a 0.49 ERA in July. His K% dropped slightly, but he also lowered his BB% while keeping his GB% at 50. One alarming statistic, however, was his LOB%, which reached a career-high 79 percent. Sabathia cannot once again count on stranding so many runners the older he gets. Returning to the Yankees on a one-year deal, there are plenty of reasons to be worried about diminishing numbers. While the run support may continue to be there, Sabathia’s velocity will continue to dip and as a result, he shouldn’t be seriously considered during the draft. At best, he’ll turn out to be a streamier option during the season.
