Camilo Doval 2024 Outlook: Moving Up The Closer Ranks
12 months agoSan Francisco Giants closer Camilo Doval racked up 39 saves in 2023, enough to finish tied for the most in the National League and only five off of the Major League lead. The All-Star closer also logged six wins, a 2.93 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, and 87 strikeouts in 67.2 innings pitched in 69 appearances. Doval threw his cutter slightly more often last season compared to 2022 but to much greater effect, resulting in a .175 batting average against, possibly a result of his aiming the pitch up further in the zone than he had in his previous seasons. In 2023, the 26-year-old reduced his walk rate to 9.3% and improved his strikeout rate to 31%. Most of Doval's other advanced metrics from 2023 fell in line with his established track record making him one of the game's more consistent options as a relief pitcher. His ADP of 52.71 makes him the fifth closer off the board where he provides better value there than those reached for in the thirties and forties.
