Cade Otton 2023 NFL Player Outlook: Fantasy Value Would Be Better With Brady
2 years agoTampa Bay Buccaneers tight end Cade Otton led all rookie tight ends with 42 receptions last season, making veteran Cameron Brate expendable this offseason. Now Otton will be Tampa Bay's top tight end heading into 2023 with unproven youngsters and past-his-prime veteran Kyle Rudolph behind him on the depth chart. That makes Otton a TE2 for fantasy football managers, but he would have a chance at being a TE1 if Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady did not decide to retire. Brady and Otton developed some chemistry during the midpoint of the 2022 season as Brady targeted his young tight end five times or more in nine different games. The jury is out on how effective Otton will be with Kyle Trask or Baker Mayfield as his quarterback. Normally a tight end, especially one that does not stretch the field, does not suffer as much fantasy-wise as game-breaking wide receivers do when there is a quarterback downgrade. Otton's numbers will go up thanks to the increased role and playing time. Still, his projected line needs to be capped at 50-550-5 because without Brady running the offense and the team itself in a semi-rebuilding mode, the scoring chances and reception opportunities will be stunted. Otton did not establish himself as either a game-breaker (9.3 YPC) or a touchdown-maker (two TD) last year, but both of those numbers should rise slightly in his sophomore season.
