Bobby Portis 2019 Player Outlook
5 years agoBobby Portis’ arrival in New York marks his third franchise since the start of the 2018-19 year. After inking a two-year deal (with the second year being a team option) during the offseason, Portis joins a litany of New York frontcourt members that will all be vying for time -- fortunately for the 24-year-old, it appears that he’ll lead the club’s second group, a role that he has thrived in during the past. In addition to being a voracious rebounder, Portis also showed last season that he has some significant touch in his offensive arsenal. In 28 games following his trade to Washington, he averaged 1.7 made three-point buckets per game, shooting at a 40.3 percent clip. Despite seeing just north of 27 minutes per contest, he tallied 14.3 points and 8.6 rebounds on a nightly basis. While his ceiling will be capped somewhat by New York’s plethora of frontcourt talent, Portis could easily emerge as a relied upon tool in head coach David Fizdale’s arsenal. Depending on league format and size, Portis is likely to be a late-round addition, but one with high upside should he remain healthy.
