Bo Bichette 2020 Outlook: Developing Into Competent 5x5 Contributor
5 years agoBo Bichette entered the 2019 season as one of the top hitting prospects in the game and didn’t disappoint after receiving his big-league call-up in late July. As the Blue Jays primary leadoff hitter, the 21-year-old slashed .311/.358/.571 with 11 HR, 32 R, 21 RBI, and four SB while becoming the first player ever to have 10 extra-base hits in his first nine career games. Bichette was a hitting machine over his first five weeks of action, piling up 23 extra-base hits in this span, but pitchers exposed the youngster’s weakness to breaking balls over the final month of the season. A larger dose of sliders and curveballs in September limited him to just six extra-base hits in this span after hitting .217 against these pitches with an expected BA of .168. Bichette kept his head above water with a respectable 24.6% Whiff% versus these deliveries, but his 42.5% Chase% will have to improve to help him make harder contact next season. Bichette’s maturity will come with more at-bats, and paired with his hitting prowess as a prospect, he should solve his late-season struggles sooner than later in 2020. He has the tools to provide sterling numbers in all five roto categories which makes him an intriguing selection as the 12th shortstop off the board at an ADP of ~76.
