Bills Defense 2019 Player Outlook: Unpolished, Young, Swiss Army Knife Defense
5 years agoDefensive coordinator Mike Pettine has one of the deepest defenses in the league, but there are a ton of unknowns. He’s already been quoted as saying “4-3? 3-4? What are you? And my answer to that question is yes to all of the above. We are a multiple-front, attacking, pressure-style defense. We're going to play man coverage, we're going to play zone coverage. What we’re going to do defensively is take advantage of what our players do well. I'm not bringing any defense here; this is going to be the Buffalo Bills defense. It's going to be built around the explosive athletes that are here, starting with the front—that's the solid foundation here—moving to the linebackers and the secondary that's stacked behind them.” They’re being drafted as the 22nd defense, which is far too low for the upside they hold. At the very least, they have a solid match-up with the Jets in week 1, so you can draft them and take a wait and see approach to see if Pettine will be able to connect all of the versatile dots. Worst-case scenario, they’re average against the Jets and you can move on week two. Best-case scenario, the defense is a turnover machine and the Bills have the sixth friendliest strength of schedule, so the upside is there. Don’t be afraid to draft the Bills in the last two rounds.
