Asdrubal Cabrera’s 2018 Role Remains Unclear
7 years agoIn September, it seemed like a foregone conclusion the New York Mets would not be picking up the 2018 $8.25 million option for shortstop/second baseman/third baseman Asdrubal Cabrera. Things change, however, and Cabrera will be back in blue and orange. Nagged by a thumb injury in 2017 yet still finishing with a .280/.351/.434 slash line with 14 home runs, the fair market value of Cabrera’s 2018 production should exceed what the Mets are paying for him for the campaign. The question is, what will Cabrera’s role be? With top prospect Amed Rosario now manning shortstop, Cabrera will either helm up second or third base, depending on what additional moves the Mets make this winter. Right now, the odds favor Cabrera at third with the Mets finding a second basemen on the cheap, but it’s still early. Either way, Cabrera will likely see time around the infield, as usual, carrying over his 2017 multi-positional ways.
