Aric Almirola Strong In Long-Run Practice Speed In Gateway
2 years agoWhen it comes to track type and driver preference, Aric Almirola's is definitely the shorter, flat tracks on the schedule. That's why he excels at places like Richmond, Phoenix, and New Hampshire--where he got his last win back in July of 2021. The good news for Almirola is that we're racing at Gateway this weekend, which is also a shorter, flat track. That's why it shouldn't have been very surprising that the #10 Ford looked good in practice, especially in lap averages. Aric was just 11th-fastest in five-lap average during Saturday's practice session but ranked 6th-fastest in ten-lap average, 5th-fastest in 15-lap average, and 3rd-fastest in 20-lap average. He qualified 24th for Sunday's Enjoy Illinois 300. Almirola finished 5th in the first-ever NASCAR Cup Series race here at Gateway last season, and if his long-run practice speed translates to the race on Sunday, he could be in contention to get another good result.
