Antonio Gibson 2020 Outlook: Explosive Playmaker Ready To Soar As RB
4 years agoThe Washington Football Team used the 66th pick in the draft on one of the most electrifying players available, running back Antonio Gibson. The speedy Gibson played wide receiver at Memphis, so he'll face a bit of a learning curve playing running back in the NFL, though reports out of Washington camp have been positive. The team must like him as well because they released Adrian Peterson, meaning Gibson will share the backfield with Bryce Love. Love is more of a traditional running back - Gibson had just 33 carries in his college career - but Gibson will be involved plenty, especially in the passing game. In fact, his new head coach Ron Rivera has already compared Gibson to another player he coached with the Panthers, Christian McCaffrey. While it would be unfair to expect Gibson to perform like the All-Pro, Rivera's experience with McCaffrey should help him maximize Gibson's unique talents. Last season in college, Gibson scored eight receiving touchdowns and four rushing touchdowns while averaging over 19.3 yards per catch. His 4.39-second 40-yard dash time makes him a home-run threat every time he touches the ball so he should get plenty of opportunities in an offense that lacks playmakers. Gibson's average draft position has skyrocketed since Peterson's release, but if he's available at pick 70 he should be considered as a high-upside RB3/flex option in fantasy.
