Alexander Mattison 2020 Outlook: High-Profile Handcuff Searching For Standalone Value
5 years agoMinnesota Vikings running back Alexander Mattison flashed a ton of potential last season, but never materialized as anything more than a high-profile handcuff for Pro-Bowler Dalvin Cook. Mattison was efficient when he touched the ball, he averaged a healthy 4.6 yards per carry, but only had double-digit carries in four games and never rushed for more than 63 yards in a single game. For the season, Mattison rushed for 462 yards on 100 carries and just one touchdown while providing very little in the passing game. The team made it a point to rest Cook at times, but he still out-carried Mattison 250-100 while playing the lion's share of the snaps and when Cook did get hurt late in the season, Mattison was out with an ankle injury of his own. Heading into 2020, the Vikings backfield seems clear, this is still Cook's team and Mattison will spell him at times while holding massive upside should he become the starter on a Vikings team that loves to run the ball. Mattison should be targeted by every owner that drafts Cook, but won't hold much standalone value unless he can improve in the passing game. He had just 10 catches last season so he won't be a fantasy starter without a higher percentage of the carries.
