Alex Ovechkin Sets New Goals Record Sunday
Washington Capitals winger Alex Ovechkin became the NHL's all-time leading goal-scorer on Sunday with his 895th career goal in a 4-1 loss to the New York Islanders. The record-breaking goal came in the second period during a power-play situation. Ovechkin made history in his 1,487th career regular-season game, breaking a tie at the top of the goals chart with Wayne Gretzky, who held the goals record for 31 years. Teams have struggled to contain Ovechkin all year, as the Capitals captain now boasts 42 goals and 69 points in 61 games for the season. The Russian superstar has scored in five consecutive games, putting him only two away from matching his best-ever goal streak, which Ovechkin achieved during his rookie campaign in 2005-06.
