PGA DFS DraftKings Pivots: Sleepers and Value Picks - The Open

Welcome back, RotoBallers, to my PGA DFS Pivots for DraftKings! This week, the PGA event is The Open.

We arrive at the final major of the year, The Open. Golfers will expect firm and fast conditions at St. Andrews. Many golfers have said they have never seen St. Andrews play this fast. The fairways appear to be faster than the greens. This makes holding fairways and avoiding trouble difficult. While scoring may be low this week, it will still take skill and creativity to score.

With tame wind and these fast fairways, wedge and around the green play will be very important. I am looking at golfers who excel in those categories. We will also see some long lag putts, three-putt avoidance may be a key stat as well. Good luck!

The Open - DFS Lineup Pivots

Jon Rahm ($10,800)

John Rahm is currently projected to be one of the lowest-owned golfers in the 10k range.  Rahm is going completely overlooked right now and is undervalued. Rahm had putting struggles early in the year but has since improved in that category. Rahm recently recorded a 12th place finish at The U.S. Open and a 10th at The Memorial. In his last start at The Scottish Open, he finished in 55th place. Rahm struggled some off-the-tee last week and I expect that measure to improve at St. Andrews. Rahm has also struggled early in his career at The Open. However, he appears to have figured links-style out. He finished in third place last year and in 11th in 2019. Rahm is one of the best golfers in the world and getting him at nice ownership discount is enticing in DFS.

Tommy Fleetwood ($8,600)

Tommy Fleetwood is not flying under the radar. However, Fleetwood is a must-play this week. Fleetwood has excellent recent form at The Open, highlighted by a second-place finish in 2019. He is also arriving in good form after recording a fourth-place finish at The Scottish Open. What makes Fleetwood a great play is his short game and wedges. If St. Andrews continues to play fast and firm, golfers will need to execute with their wedges and short game. Over 24 rounds, Fleetwood ranks fifth in scrambling and 19th in short game. With his wedges, he ranks 11th from 100-125 yards, 28th from 125-150 yards, and 18th from 75-100 yards. Fleetwood may be a lock in all my lineups.

Brooks Koepka ($8,500)

In Brooks Koepka’s last four Opens, he has three top-ten finishes. His best finish is a fourth in 2019. Koepka has not been in good form. In his last three starts, he has two 55-place finishes and a missed cut at The Masters. He also finished in 20th place in Portland on the LIV tour. Koepka was in the final pairing but shot a four-over 76 to fall back to 20th place. His form is likely why we get him at a severe ownership and salary discount. The value and upside on Koepka are just too nice to pass up.

Patrick Reed ($7,300)

Another LIV guy, Patrick Reed will likely be a staple in my lineups. Reed has played well at this major. He has recorded a 10th place finish in 2019 and a 12th place finish in 2016. Reed’s short game alone is a reason to consider him. Over the last 24 rounds, he ranks first in strokes gained around-the-green, 16th in short game, and fourth in three-putt avoidance.  For what it’s worth, In Reed’s last start on the LIV Tour, he finished in third place.

Russel Henley ($7,200)

Projected to be in the single digits is Russel Henley. Henley must considered because of his wedge play. Over the last 24 rounds, he ranks 6th from 125-150 yards, 8th from 100-125 yards, and first from 75-100 yards. There are not many better with the wedges than Henley. While his form and history at this event are not great, I am placing a lot of weight on wedge play. Look for Henley to play well this week.
