ANALYSIS: The Miami Dolphins added to their running back room by selecting Ollie Gordon II in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma State. Despite having a disappointing 2024 campaign in college, Gordon looked like one of the game's top running back prospects in 2023.
During the 2023 season, Gordon was one of the best running backs in college football, as he racked up 1,732 yards with 21 rushing touchdowns on 2885 attempts. Both of these marks led the Big 12 during this campaign. However, in 2024, Gordon tallied just 880 yards on the ground.
While the 21-year-old opened training sitting as the No. 3 option on the depth chart, Gordon could find himself in a starting role much sooner than expected. Currently, the No. 2 option, Jaylen Wright (leg), underwent surgery and is slated to miss at least the first few weeks of the regular season. In addition, the top running back, De'Von Achane (calf), is dealing with a calf injury.
While the team's general manager has expressed that Achane is expected to play in Week 1, Gordon could find himself in a starting role if Achane were to face a setback.
For now, Gordon remains an RB4, but if he were to be the only healthy option on the depth chart in Week 1, he would enter must-start RB2 status facing the Indianapolis Colts.
