Horse For The Course: PGA DFS Course History - 2024 Butterfield Bermuda Championship

Todd McGill's DraftKings, FanDuel PGA DFS picks for the 2024 Butterfield Bermuda Championship at Port Royal Golf Course. Picks for daily fantasy golf based on course history

The penultimate event in the PGA Tour Fall Series is set to kick off this week at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. It's arguably one of the prettiest destinations worldwide to host a professional golf tournament. However, the field is not nearly as picturesque as the views with only one player this week ranked inside the top 50 in the world (Lucas Glover: 48).

Seeing recognizable faces won't be easy this week, but over the years, this event has played a major role in giving up-and-coming players a chance to earn valuable FedEx Cup points who have turned out to be some of golf's biggest stars like Scottie Scheffler, Wyndham Clark, and Ludvig Aberg.

Horse For The Course is an article highlighting players in this week's field with elite course history and is part of our free PGA DFS content here at RotoBaller. 2024 Butterfield Bermuda Championship

There could certainly be less appealing places to play golf than a beautiful island paradise, which is a bright spot for the rank-and-file players on the PGA Tour attempting to secure starts for 2025. It's given us a mixed bag of resurgent players and fresh-faced champions since the inaugural event in 2019; making it feel like anyone's ball game come Thursday.

Camilo Villegas returns to defend his title from last season, marking his first victory on tour since 2014. His -24 under-par score tied the previous low score total of Brendon Todd in 2019, so as long as the wind stays manageable, expect a birdie barrage on this meager 6,828-yard layout.

McKenzie Hughes and 2022 Champion, Seamus Power headline this year's field.

You can also find out who the smart money is on by checking out Spencer Aguiar's PGA DFS: Vegas Report every week. And be sure to read our other top-notch weekly PGA DFS articles and Player News/Matchup Outlook Posts to help you win big!

The Course: Port Royal Golf Course

Par 71 - 6,828 Yards | Greens: Tifeagle Bermuda | Designed By: Robert Trent Jones

Over the first five iterations of this event, scores have ranged from -15 to -24 under par, which is a bit surprising given its length and overall playability. However, the island setting of this RTJ design possesses the greatest of all equalizers: wind (and lots of it).

This isn't a bombers course, as one could imagine, given its ranking as the second-shortest course on the PGA Tour. What garners the most success here is crisp ball striking and managing your way down the closing stretch that features the signature par-3 16th hole at 235 yards, forcing players to take a large carry over the Atlantic Ocean.

With three of the five past champions in the 35+ age range, it is evident that almost anyone could be a factor here on any given week. That's an exciting change from the lengthy venues we've come to expect on tour that sometimes feel like they alienate certain players.

Recent Butterfield Bermuda Championship Winners

  • 2023: Camilo Villegas (-24)
  • 2022: Seamus Power (-19)
  • 2021: Lucas Herbert (-15)
  • 2020: Brian Gay (-15)
  • 2019: Brendon Todd (-24)

The Horse

Seamus Power

  • Notable Finishes: 1st ('22), T12 ('21)

Seamus Power finds his way to the top of the betting board at +360 on FanDuel Sportsbook for more than one reason. One is the impressive run that he's had here before skipping this event in 2023, the other is his recent form with three top 15s in his last four starts.

One lone concern is the dip in strokes gained on approach in his last two events, but he was still able to find ways to get the ball in the hole in other areas. He ranked 8th in the field in this metric at the Black Desert Championship a few weeks back, and any return to that kind of form could warrant another big week in Bermuda for the Irishman.

The Ponies

Justin Lower

  • Notable Finishes:  T8 ('22), T17 ('21)

Given his narrow miss in Mexico just last week, Justin Lower will be a popular name in DFS over the next few days. It was his first top-five since April, but the comfortability he's shown at Port Royal is more justification for taking another chance.

His play before four days ago may create some cause for concern, especially in the way of ball striking, however, with a T20 as his worst finish here in three starts, it's easy to see another high finish coming his way by week's end.

Brendon Todd

  • Notable Finishes: 1st ('19), T20 ('23)

Brendon Todd returned to this event last year after not making the trip the two previous seasons, and missing the cut in 2020. He secured a top-20 finish to go along with his win at the inaugural event in 2019.

Unfortunately, he has struggled mightily in the fall swing, averaging -2.33 strokes gained on approach over his last three starts. For the purpose of this article, he is an unquestioned standout, but for DFS decisions, it may be wiser to stay away.

Kevin Yu

  • Notable Finishes: T3 ('22)

It's been a successful run for Kevin Yu this fall with a win at Sanderson Farms and a T16 in Japan. It is still the same "ride-or-die by the putter" as it has been all season, though for now, it's working.

Normally, I'd like more than eight rounds to work with, but he's the third-highest player in the field in total strokes gained with at least that many rounds played.
