Fantasy Baseball Injury Reports - Updates for Kyle Tucker, Mookie Betts, Carlos Correa, Zach Wheeler, Heston Kjerstad, and more

carlos correa fantasy baseball rankings draft sleepers MLB injury news

Fantasy baseball injury updates and injury reports for MLB hitters and pitchers as of 7/15/2024, including Carlos Correa, Kyle Tucker, Mookie Betts, Zach Wheeler, Tyler Glasnow, and more.

As MLB heads into the All-Star break this week, it's a great time for fantasy baseball managers to take stock of injuries around the league. At the halfway point of the season, there is no shortage of high-impact fantasy baseball studs dealing with bumps and bruises, so let's take a look at the top injured players including Kyle Tucker, Mookie Betts, Tyler Glasnow, Carlos Correa, and more.

This is the next edition of this year's fantasy baseball injury updates for hitters and pitchers as of July 15, 2024. Some players on this list impact fantasy baseball more than others, but with leagues of all shapes and sizes, all players should be monitored ahead of the start of the week.

Let's look at the injury updates for the top fantasy baseball players.

Kyle Tucker Injury Update

Houston Astros outfielder Kyle Tucker (shin) played catch on the field at Minute Maid Park before last week's contest against the visiting Miami Marlins. It marked the first time he'd done any on-field baseball activities since fouling a ball off his shin way back on June 3.

Fantasy managers have to be frustrated by how long Tucker has been out for a seemingly minor injury, but the good news is that he's making progress. However, given his long layoff, there's a good chance he's going to need to go on a minor-league rehab assignment, which means it's unlikely we'll see him back in Houston's starting lineup immediately after the All-Star break, though Tucker recently stated that he hopes to return soon after the break. The 27-year-old left-handed slugger is an elite fantasy asset when he's healthy, so there's no way he should be available on any waiver wire.

Mookie Betts Injury Update

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said that infielder Mookie Betts (hand) has started taking soft ground balls after he had only been doing "shadow" work up until now. Betts has been on the injured list for around a month now after fracturing his hand on a hit-by-pitch. The good news is that he didn't need surgery and is improving slowly.

There isn't an exact timetable for Betts' return atop the Dodgers' starting lineup in the second half of the season, but fantasy managers shouldn't expect him to be back until sometime in August, barring a setback. And when Betts does return, it sounds like he could be moved from shortstop to second base, which would allow Miguel Rojas to see more time at the 6, while the struggling Gavin Lux would see more time on the bench. Betts needs to remain stashed in an IL spot in all fantasy leagues.

Fernando Tatis Jr. Injury Update

San Diego Padres outfielder Fernando Tatis Jr. (quadriceps) is highly unlikely to play in the MLB All-Star game, according to Bernie Wilson of the Associated Press. San Diego skipper Mike Shildt spoke to the media and expressed that Tatis Jr. is still recovering from a stress reaction in his right thigh bone that caused him to hit the 10-day injured list on June 24.

The 25-year-old was off to a great start to the campaign with an excellent .279/.354/.468 with 14 round-trippers, eight stolen bases, and 36 RBI. Under the hood, he held a .400 xwOBA, .309 xBA, and a .553 xSLG, which are some of the best marks in all of the sport.

Tyler Glasnow Injury Update

Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Tyler Glasnow (back) was placed on the 15-day injured list with a back issue, according to manager Dave Roberts. Glasnow's back tightened up on him when he played catch on Sunday, so he'll hit the shelf and rest up during this week's All-Star break.

Perhaps this is why Glasnow has allowed 10 earned runs on 10 hits (one homer) while walking four and striking out eight in nine innings in his last two starts against the Giants and Brewers. The Dodgers are hopeful that Glasnow's injury isn't serious and that he can return shortly after the All-Star break, but that remains to be seen. Fantasy managers must stash him in an IL spot in all formats for the time being.

Jared Jones Injury Update

Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Jared Jones (lat) is expected to miss "weeks, not days" with his grade two right lat strain, according to Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. General Manager Ben Cherington further expressed that he expects the 22-year-old to return to the mound at some point this season.

The former second-round pick was shut down throwing for at least two weeks before the medical staff determines the next step in his rehab process. The right-hander left his most recent start on July 3 early due to strain in his right lat and was eventually placed on the 15-day injured list on July 4. Prior to the injury, the rookie was performing quite well with a 3.56 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, and a 27:98 BB:K ratio across 91 innings. While Jones remains sidelined, Luiz Ortiz should continue to see time in the Pittsburgh rotation.

Cody Bellinger Injury Update

The Chicago Cubs placed outfielder Cody Bellinger (finger) on the 10-day injured list last Thursday with a left middle-finger fracture and recalled outfielder Alexander Canario from Triple-A Iowa in a corresponding move.

Bellinger fractured his finger in last Wednesday's contest against the Baltimore Orioles when he was hit by a pitch in the seventh inning, and he'll now most likely miss more than the required 10 days on the IL, extending into the start of the second half of the season after this week's All-Star break. Although the 28-year-old left-handed slugger hasn't been nearly as good as he was in his first year in Chicago in 2023, when he hit 26 homers, drove in 97 and stole 20 bases, he deserves to be stashed in all fantasy leagues.

Heston Kjerstad Injury Update

Baltimore Orioles outfield prospect Heston Kjerstad (head) was placed on the 7-day concussion injured list on Saturday, July 13. In a corresponding move, Baltimore promoted outfielder Kyle Stowers from Triple-A Norfolk. Kjerstad left Friday's game early after being hit by a pitch in the head. The Arkansas product was originally set to start in Saturday's game but was a late scratch after struggling in pregame drills.

The former second-overall pick has performed very well in his latest stint in the major leagues with a .378/.465/.676 slash line, three home runs, and 12 RBI. Stowers has appeared in 17 games this season at the major league level and held a .286/.278/.486 line and could see an occasional start while Kjerstad remains sidelined.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto Injury Update

Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto was transferred to the 60-day IL on Saturday. Brent Honeywell, who was successfully claimed off of waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates, will be put on the 40-man roster in Yamamoto's place.

Yamamoto is ineligible to return until August 15, but returning that soon is probably too optimistic as the Japanese righty just began a throwing program Saturday and would likely need to make a few rehab starts before rejoining the club. Honeywell pitched just three-and-a-third innings for Pittsburgh this season.

Zack Wheeler Injury Update

Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Zack Wheeler (back) did not make his next scheduled start on Sunday against the Oakland Athletics after being removed from his outing on Wednesday early against the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers with lower-back tightness. However, manager Rob Thomson said Wheeler will start in his first turn coming out of this week's All-Star break, but it's unclear which day that will fall on.

While fantasy managers would have loved to have used the 34-year-old veteran in a juicy matchup on Sunday in a two-start week, they'd probably prefer that the Phils play it safe and hold him out until the second half. Unsurprisingly, Wheeler has been a must-start for fantasy managers every time he toes the rubber in 2024. He's gone 10-4 with a 2.70 ERA and 0.99 WHIP with 126 strikeouts and only 35 walks in 116 2/3 innings over his 19 starts in his fifth year in Philly.

Carlos Correa Injury Update

Minnesota Twins shortstop Carlos Correa (heel) has been diagnosed with plantar fasciitis, according to Dan Hayes of The Athletic. Correa was a late scratch from Saturday's lineup and underwent an MRI shortly after. The 29-year-old had a similar injury in his opposite foot last season. Hayes also reported that this case is said to be not as severe as last time.

Correa spent time on the injured list for this injury last season and could do the same again. The former first-overall selection has enjoyed a nice bounce-back season in 2024 with a strong .308/.377/.520 line and 13 home runs. If Correa were to miss an extended period of time, Brooks Lee and Willi Castro are strong candidates to fill in at shortstop, while Corey Seager will replace Correa in the upcoming MLB All-Star Game
