FanDuel PGA DFS Lineup Picks - 2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship

Joe Nicely breaks down the FanDuel DFS lineup picks for the 2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship. Daily fantasy golf advice on under-owned golfers and who to avoid for your lineups.

Hello RotoBaller PGA crew! It's great to be back with you guys and I appreciate you joining us here at RotoBaller for your PGA DFS research. This week we'll dig into the FanDuel PGA DFS slate for the first event of the FedEx Cup Playoffs...the FedEx St. Jude Championship.

In this article, we'll discuss some of the standout PGA DFS plays available on FanDuel for the 2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship. While it's impossible to hit on every player, we'll touch on some different plays across all price ranges, breaking the groups down into "High", "Mid", and "Low" price options that are worth considering.

Like always, the purpose of this piece is to help you put together your optimal daily fantasy golf lineups for FanDuel, whether that be from a GPP perspective or a cash-game mentality. Be sure to also read all of our other top-notch weekly PGA DFS and betting articles to help you win big!

2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship - PGA DFS Overview

The Course: TPC Southwind
Par 70 - 7,244 Yards, Greens: Bermuda, Designed By: Ron Pritchard

Doglegs, bunkers, and water hazards...oh my! That's what awaits players at this former Memphis dairy farm. TPC Southwind winds through lakes, streams, and ponds with the danger of water always lurking, especially on the par-3 11th hole that is almost a 'baby brother' to the famous 17th island green at TPC Sawgrass. Many of Southwind's par-4's have dogleg tendencies, which forces the bombers to throttle down a bit, though we have seen long hitters like Sam Burns, Justin Thomas, and Brooks Koepka play very well here. Precise ball striking will be key, as the water hazards and almost 100 bunkers in play demand accuracy. Southwind is a long-ish Par 70 that's made all the more difficult by the winding layout.

Both these fairways and greens are tough to hit, so I will primarily be targeting ball strikers with sharp iron games. We have eight par-4s that are 450 yards or longer, so I'll lean towards guys that fair well on long par-4s.

With all the above duly noted, let's also keep in mind that this week's field will be comprised of the best players on the PGA Tour, so we will likely see a few players break away from the group with excellent scores. As a result, I'll give a look to birdies or better gained, while also giving a bump to those that can routinely avoid bogeys. On a side note as a Tennessee resident, I can tell you that Memphis in August is going to be unbelievably hot and humid. I'm not sure if that's truly actionable info, but you might want to target players that grew up playing in the Southeastern part of the U.S. and have some experience dealing with these types of conditions.

Fantasy Golf Lineup Picks for FanDuel (PGA DFS)

We have tons of great weekly PGA articles, DFS analysis, tools and DFS advice. Be sure to read our other fantastic articles regarding this week's event including DFS lineup picks for DraftKings/FanDuel, betting advice and DFS prop picks.

High-Priced FanDuel DFS Plays

Scottie Scheffler ($11,700)

Winless since the Masters in April, perhaps it's fair to say that Scottie Scheffler has slid to the back of the DFS consciousness just a tiny bit. Near misses at both the Charles Schwab and the U.S. Open indicate that the Texan's game has remained sharp, and he's gained an average of 7.6 strokes T2G per start over his last five events.

What Scheffler hasn't had of late is much cooperation from the flat stick, as he's lost an average of 0.7 strokes per start over his last five. I wouldn't be surprised if that changes this week at TPC Southwind, a course where he's posted top-15 finishes each of the last two years and that has Bermuda greens, the surface that's been his best historically.

Matt Fitzpatrick ($10,900)

Fitzy's skill set fits this layout well, as evidenced by two top-six finishes in his last three St. Jude appearances. While much has, rightly, been made about his jump in distance off the tee, it is crucial to note that he hasn't sacrificed accuracy in the pursuit of those gains.

The 27-year-old impressively grades out 20th in this week's field in Driving Distance over the last 36 rounds, but more importantly, when talking about the challenge ahead this week, he still ranks seventh in overall Good Drives Gained. That ability to put the ball in play is a huge key to success at Southwind and I look for the Englishman to once again thrive on this layout.

Will Zalatoris ($10,800)

Willy Z is sort of an outlier in that he's actually punished by the type of schedule the PGA Tour plays. Zalatoris' strengths suit difficult golf courses, not birdie fests where it takes 25-under par to win. It basically leaves the four majors and perhaps a half-dozen other events for the youngster to be a truly elite DFS option for us.

TPC Southwind qualifies as one of those courses, as the lengthy Par 70 demands excellent ball striking from T2G. The Wake Forest alum scored a T8 in his St. Jude debut last year and I expect more of the same from the man that's been a complete ball-striking machine since first stepping foot on the PGA Tour. Zalatoris grades out second in this elite field in SG: Ball Striking over long-term measurements and a win is eventually coming at some point. He did make a caddie change mid-tournament last week at the Wyndham, which is very out of the ordinary, but perhaps he'll be energized by having someone new on the bag this week in Memphis.

Mid-Priced FanDuel DFS Plays

Sam Burns ($10,100)

Sam Burns is nipping at superstar status, but the LSU product has yet to gain the consistency that some of the truly elite golfers on the Tour possess. Those occasional dips in production allow us to catch Burns with a relaxed price tag on some slates. That feels like the case this week with the four-time PGA Tour winner underpriced in relation to his upside.

The 26-year-old played beautifully on this TPC Southwind layout last year before ultimately falling in a playoff to Abraham Ancer. His penchant for Bermuda greens is well known (third SG: Putting on Bermuda L50) and the iron play has been rock-solid in recent months (fifth SG: Approach L24). Yes, there's a level of volatility that comes with rostering Burns, but there's legitimate tournament-winning upside, which makes him a prime GPP target.

Russell Henley ($9,900)

Russell Henley is another player that went through something of a summer swoon, as his results dipped dramatically after a hot start to the year. However, the Georgia Bulldog's arrow appears to once again be pointing up, as he's went T10-T5 in his last two starts.

Henley has the ability to get nuclear hot with the irons and he's gained a massive 13 combined strokes on Approach across his last two outings. His record at TPC Southwind is a mixed bag, but he did log a T7 on this layout back in 2016 and it is a terrific fit for his skill set on paper.

Billy Horschel ($9,900)

A pure course history play here with Billy Ho, a player that rarely pops statistically but has amassed an impressive resume on this Southwind layout. Over 11 career trips to the former Memphis dairy farm, Horschel has posted an eye-opening five top-10 finishes.

While he doesn't jump off the page in statistical metrics, he has at least been solid in recent starts, gaining a combined 10.6 strokes total in his last two outings. That form, when coupled with his course history and sub-$10k FD price tag, puts him squarely into GPP consideration for me on this slate.

Low-Priced FanDuel DFS Players

Seamus Power ($9,300)

After nabbing his first career victory late last year, Seamus Power has acquitted himself very nicely this year while getting consistent starts in big events. The Irishman does have some missed cuts on the game log, but perhaps the most impressive thing about him is just how well he finishes on those occasions when he does play the weekend. Across his 10 made cuts in 2022, Power's average finish has been 16th place. That's more than enough upside for me at this price point, especially on a TPC Southwind layout on which he's gone T27-T12 in his two previous appearances.

Scott Stallings ($8,900)

With a field packed so full of superstars, it's easy for a guy like Scott Stallings to get lost in the shuffle. However, if his recent form is any indicator, it would be a mistake to overlook him this week. Stallings heads to Memphis riding some hot ball striking, as he's gained strokes both T2G and on Approach in four straight. That sharpness from T2G has led to four consecutive top-13 finishes. A Tennessee native, he's very familiar with this week's layout and has made the cut in six of eight career appearances at TPC Southwind, highlighted by a runner-up finish back in 2013.
