FanDuel MLB DFS Lineup Picks (8/23/21): Daily Fantasy Baseball Advice

Mike Marteny highlights the top FanDuel MLB DFS lineup picks for8/23/21, and a couple of sleepers to consider while building daily rosters.

We have a solid Monday with seven games going on, but there is a matinee in Fenway so the FanDuel main slate is six games. Only one pitcher commands five figures for a salary tonight and he plays the Blue Jays, so there really is no clear-cut ace. It's slates like these that can get fun on FanDuel.

We shouldn't have any weather tonight, which is nice after a day like yesterday where the Yankees canceled the Sunday game on Saturday because of the forecast of severe weather. It's going to be hot in Atlanta, humid in Chicago, and both in Houston assuming the roof is open. We also have a slight breeze blowing out in Wrigley, so that appears to be the best spot for offense.

I'll be providing you with my daily fantasy baseball lineup picks for the FanDuel main slate on 8/23/2021. Be sure to also check out all the MLB player news, including late scratches, and the projected and confirmed daily MLB lineups for each DFS slate. You can also check out today's DraftKings MLB DFS lineup picks, and read more DFS advice and lineup picks for other sports too. Let's get to it!

FanDuel DFS Pitchers

Cash Game/GPP Anchor Play:

Zack Greinke – HOU vs. KC ($9,200)

Greinke returned to Kansas City last week and was solid, giving up only one run in six innings. The bad news is that the gave up more runs than strikeouts he recorded. That's right, Greinke failed to strike out a single batter for the first time since July 7......of 2012. He had an excuse in that game though. Greinke failed to record a single out in that game. It had been almost exactly five years since Greinke had as little as one strikeout. Chalk this up to an anomaly and don't expect the Royals to escape unscathed again. Add a few strikeouts to Greinke's stat line from last week, and he's plenty good enough to anchor your lineup tonight.

Potential Alternate Play

Huascar Ynoa – ATL vs. NYY ($8,600)

Ynoa was filthy against the Marlins in his first start since May 16 last week. My only reservations about using Ynoa is that the Braves will likely not push him too hard once again. He only threw 80 pitches in his return and I would be shocked if they let him go 90 here. Still, despite the added muscle at the trade deadline, the Yankees are still struggling – and striking out – against righties.

FanDuel DFS Infielders

Matt Olson – 1B, OAK vs. SEA ($3,900)

Marco Gonzales has shed his reverse splits this season, but I still trust Matt Olson and his four career homers against him in 33 at bats. Olson has always hit lefties well and this year is no different. 16 of his 31 homers have come against southpaws in 127 less at bats than against righties and he's hitting just two average points lower against southpaws. Olson is a silent lefty killer, and I plan on using that to my advantage tonight.

Marcus Semien – 2B/SS, TOR vs. CWS ($4,100)

I wouldn't say that I'm going after Lynn. The overall numbers speak for themselves. However, Lynn has allowed nine runs in the past four starts. That's a lot for him. Semien has faced Lynn enough that the .364 average isn't a fluke. He also has three doubles, a homer, six runs scored, and 3RBI against Lynn in his career. Semien has three homers in the last four games. This looks like a nice spot for a one-off.

Matt Chapman – 3B, OAK vs. SEA ($3,600)

It took a bit, but Chapman is finally starting to hit in 2021. Chapman is hitting .258 with five homers, 10 RBI, 12 runs scored, and a steal in 18 August games. This we can live with. Add in his career-long torment of Marco Gonzales, and we have someone worth using in DFS. Chapman is hitting .433 with a homer, four RBI, eight runs scored, and a steal in 30 at-bats against Gonzales.

Nicky Lopez – 2B/SS, KC at HOU ($2,700)

Yeah, Grienke only gave up one run last week against the Royals. Why am I using one? Well for starters, Lopez is hitting .364 over the last ten games. In that game against Greinke on August 18, Lopez scored that lone run and swiped two bases. There's room for Greinke to still be an elite play and for Lopez to go over 20 FanDuel points. It happened less than a week ago.

FanDuel DFS Outfielders

Starling Marte – OF, OAK vs. SEA ($3,900)

The A's gave up prized prospect Jesus Luzardo for Marte back on July 28. So far, it looks like a hell of a deal for the A's. Marte is hitting .358 with two homers, 14 runs scored, 14 RBI, and a staggering 17 steals in just 22 games for Oakland. All those steals can add up quickly and it doesn't hurt that Marco Gonzales is having one of the worst seasons of his career against righties.

Charlie Blackmon – OF, COL at CHC ($3,500)

It has been a tough season for Blackmon. We are almost to the end of August and he has yet to hit double digits in homers. However, he is showing signs of life lately with a .324 average in the last ten games with a pair of homers and eight RBI. Kyle Hendricks was outstanding at home last year, but this year he has a 5.17 ERA in 13 Wrigley Field starts. Blackmon has been the antithesis of Rockies hitters considering his average is 20 points higher on the road. With the wind blowing out at Wrigley, this looks like a good time to take a chance on Blackmon.

Jake Meyers – OF, HOU vs. KC ($2,700)

Meyers has ten hits during his current six-game hitting streak with a homer, six RBI, and four runs scored. Not bad for a guy who's just supposed to be a fill-in for Kyle Tucker. Tucker isn't back yet, so keep riding Meyers as long as he's this hot. We need the salary relief and he's putting up better numbers than guys priced $1000 more than him.
