The Great American Race is coming up on Sunday, as this year's Daytona 500 will kick off the 2025 Cup Series season. Before that, though, we need to set the starting lineup with the two Duels on Thursday evening.

The Daytona 500 is unique in that the starting lineup isn't strictly set by traditional qualifying methods. Chase Briscoe won the pole on Wednesday night while Austin Cindric ended up second-fastest, but those are the only two starting positions that are confirmed for Sunday.

All 45 cars are now split into two for the Duel race on Thursday night. The finishing order of Duel No. 2 will determine the inside row starting positions for The Great American Race, and the top-finishing "Open" driver will lock their spot into Sunday's race as well.

How The Algorithm Works & Important Stats

There are quite a few statistics that go into the algorithm formula, including recent performance both overall and at this week's track, specifically, similar track performance, projected strength of the car, practice speeds, starting position, and a few other variables.

All of these numbers are used by the algorithm to compute a "Power Index" number for each driver.

The higher the Power Index number, the faster that driver is expected to be during the race. All drivers are then ranked based on their Power Index number to achieve the predicted finishing order of that event.
