David Montgomery fantasy football start 'em, sit 'em picks for Week 1 (2024). Should you start or sit David Montgomery for fantasy football lineups?
BALLER MOVE: Start in All Formats
POSITIONAL VALUE: RB2
ANALYSIS: Jahmyr Gibbs (hamstring) is on track to be ready for Detroit's season opener, but that doesn't mean David Montgomery should be sent to fantasy benches.
Scoring should come easy on "Sunday Night Football" when the Lions host the Rams. The O/U of 51 (at the time of this writing) is the highest on the Week 1 slate. The teams combined for 47 points when Detroit knocked Los Angeles out of the postseason. Detroit remains one of the league's elite offenses.
The Rams defense was one of the better units against running backs a year ago and vulnerable against the pass. This time, future Hall of Famer Aaron Donald won't be clogging up the middle. The Rams will rely on second-year nose tackle Kobie Turner instead.
Montgomery should get his standard share of approximately 15 touches, most of which will come on the ground. Any catches will be a bonus (he caught 16 passes in 14 games last year). The goal-line role won't go away. Fantasy managers should hope for a 70-yard, one-touchdown performance out of Montgomery as their RB2.
