Yonder Alonso (1B, CLE) - Week 9 Waiver Wire Pickups

BALLER MOVE: Add in 12+ Team Leagues

OWNED IN: 25% of leagues

ANALYSIS: Cleveland Indians first baseman Yonder Alonso only has a .219 batting average over the last month, but has hits in two of his last four games and could be turning the corner. A 30-home run hitter last season, Alonso was 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, and three RBI against the Cubs on May 22 and is a good play against right-handed pitcher.

Alonso has struck out in 25% of his plate appearances this month, but his .289 BABIP shows that he has been a bit unlikely. He has a 20% line drive rate and 19.6% soft hit ball rate this month, as his 34.8% hard hit ball rate shows that he should be a lot better than a .219 hitter for the month. His 40% fly ball rate shows that he should be hitting for more power as well, showing that he could be a great buy-low player.

The Indians brought in Alonso to take Mike Napoli and Jay Bruce's role in the Indians' lineup and his nine home runs this season are a nice start. He only has a .228 batting average, but batted ball trends show that he should hit for a better average as well. Those in deeper leagues should add Alonso as a CI.
