Wells Fargo Championship - PGA DFS Overview

Quail Hollow Club

7,521 Yards - Par 71 - Greens: Bermuda - Designer: George Cobb

Originally designed by George Cobb in 1961, Quail Hollow has always presented players with the daunting closing stretch dubbed the "Green Mile", but a Tom Fazio upgrade prior to hosting the 2017 PGA Championship put the North Carolina layout in the conversation for one of the tougher tests on the Tour schedule.

The first thing that jumps out is Quail Hollow's length. At almost 7,600 yards, a golfer's distance will play an important factor this week. We have an almost polar opposite situation to what we saw at Harbour Town a couple of weeks ago...where players were almost never forced to hit drivers off the tee.

At Quail Hollow, players will be using the big dog often, which makes me very interested in a player's prowess off the tee. Ball striking will be important, as it seemingly is every week. We must also consider scrambling ability and bogey avoidance on this tough layout.

It must be noted that the 2017 regular-season edition of this tournament was played at a different course, so when you're doing course-history research ignore '17, unless you want to look at the PGA Championship from that year.

For an in-depth breakdown of this week's course, check out RotoBaller's PGA Premium Course Breakdown by Josh Bennett!

Let's Look At The Stats

Fantasy Golf Lineup Picks for FanDuel (PGA DFS)

High-Priced FanDuel DFS Plays

Justin Thomas ($12,300)

With his current tee-to-green form, Justin Thomas is basically an auto-click for me at the moment. Thomas performed beautifully last week at the Valspar, leading the field in SG: T2G, OTT, & Approach en route to a T13. Why did he finish just 13th? Well, he ranked 67th in the field in SG: Putting and made just three putts of over 10 feet all week! Put simply, if JT putts just ok on any given week he's likely to win the tournament. That feels like the case as he heads to Quail Hollow, a layout on which he captured the 2017 PGA Championship.

Bryson DeChambeau ($11,900)

This will be the first time we've seen Bryson DeChambeau since (another) disappointing outing at the Masters. While he's yet to crack the code at Augusta National, DeChambeau has proven himself to be a prolific winner on other layouts. In an era where wins are increasingly tough to come by, the Mad Scientist has found the winner's circle three times over the past calendar year. That ability to dominate golf tournaments - as well as his prodigious length off the tee - makes him an elite DFS option for me on this long Quail Hollow layout.

Rory McIlroy ($11,800)

Rory McIlroy is an intriguing talking point this week, as his course history at Quail Hollow and his current form certainly don't line up. He's been a beast on this layout, posting wins in 2010 & 2015, while setting the course record each time. With the course history out of the way, we should probably dive into McIlroy’s current form. To say there are issues would be an understatement, as the superstar heads to the Wells Fargo off missed cuts in each of his last two starts at THE PLAYERS and the Masters, not to mention a horrible outing at the WGC-Match Play. He admitted to chasing distance off the tee during the offseason due to Bryson DeChambeau’s win at Winged Foot late last year and the swing tweaks appear to be wreaking havoc with his overall game.

Rostering McIlroy this week is a bet that he’s found something with his game over the three weeks since his disappointing performance at the Masters and will be able to translate that to results in the friendly environment of this Quail Hollow layout.

Viktor Hovland ($11,500)

I've been a Viktor Hovland backer since he first turned pro and he's continually came through for me during his time on the PGA Tour. That was true last week at Valspar, where I was higher-than-most on Hovland. He posted a T3 on the Copperhead Course and heads to this week's Wells Fargo with tons of positive momentum following a final-round 65. There's no course history for him at Quail Hollow, but it is a tremendous fit on paper. Hovland thrives on Par-5s (first in field SG: Par 5 last 24 rounds) and is an excellent long-iron player (2nd Proximity from 200+ yards), skills that translate to success at Quail Hollow.

Webb Simpson ($11,400)

I suppose we should discuss the player that lives just a stone’s throw from Quail Hollow’s first tee...Webb Simpson. The Raleigh native and member of Quail Hollow Club has an intimate knowledge of this layout that is tough to put a price on. In addition to the course familiarity, Webb has - of course - been in rock-solid form this year. He’s set to tee it up on the heels of a T12 at the Masters and a T9 at the RBC Heritage. Simpson has made the cut in six of his seven 2021 starts with three top-10 finishes. As always, he’s a player that you can roster confidently in all DFS formats.

Mid-Priced FanDuel DFS Plays

Corey Conners ($10,800)

The $10k range is especially juicy this week and we'll kick the price point off with Corey Conners at $10.8k. Conners was an extremely popular option last week at Valspar and many walked away disappointed with his performance. However, the Canadian still posted a T21 and gained 4.9 strokes on Approach...a pretty good bad outing. Many will likely move on from him after the perceived bad performance last week, but I love this as a spot to stay the course with a player that's been one of the most elite ball strikers on the PGA Tour this year. He grades out first in the field in the Strokes Gained category, while ranking second in the Wells Fargo field in SG: T2G & Approach.

Will Zalatoris ($10,700)

Everybody's favorite shiny-new toy, Will Zalatoris, returns to action this week after a two-week break. The youngster certainly deserved the rest, as he's been playing basically non-stop since the fall in an attempt to secure his actual PGA Tour card. He'll tee it up in the Wells Fargo this week thanks to a Sponsor's Exemption and immediately jumps into serious DFS consideration. Willie Z has repeatedly met every tough challenge on the PGA Tour, posting a highly-publicized runner-up finish at the Masters, as well as top-10 performances on tough layouts like Bay Hill, Torrey Pines, and Winged Foot. Those results illustrate that he has the tools needed to handle a long layout such as Quail Hollow and I'm once again firing up the kid on FanDuel this week.

Abraham Ancer ($10,600)

Abraham Ancer's game isn't flashy, but the Mexican continues to impress with consistently-strong results. He's fresh off a fifth-place finish at Valspar last week for his fifth top-25 in his last six starts. His lack of length off the tee is a slight concern this week at Quail Hollow, but Ancer still grades out seventh in SG: OTT and is able to manage the Par-5s well enough to rank 14th in SG: Par-5s.

Joaquin Niemann ($10,500)

Checks a lot of the same boxes as the aforementioned Ancer...Joaquin Niemann has been unbelievably consistent in 2021, making the cut in all eight of his starts this calendar year. He's posted a pair of runner-up finishes and heads to Quail Hollow fresh off a T8 at the Valspar last week. The youngster is sneaky-long off the tee and ranks 19th in the Wells Fargo field in Driving Distance, while standing sixth overall in SG: T2G.

Brian Harman ($10,300)

The diminutive lefty come into the week in white-hot form. Harman has made the cut in all eight of his 2021 starts and has really hit his stride as of late, posting a T3 at THE PLAYERS, a strong run at the WGC-Match Play, with top-25s at the Masters & RBC Heritage. It's kinda hard to believe that little-bitty Brian Harman ranks third in this elite field in SG: Par-5s over the last 24 rounds, but the veteran has certainly outplayed his stature in that department. It will be a key area at Quail Hollow this week and one of many statistical categories in which Harman is underrated.

Low-Priced FanDuel DFS Players

Bubba Watson ($9,700)

Bubba Watson is never a player I want to build around, but he's a player that I'll occasionally have interest in from a GPP perspective. That's the case for me this week, as the options available become increasingly volatile as we move down the FanDuel salary scale. Watson piques my interest for two reasons: his length and the proven ability to win golf tournaments. Bubba has 12 career wins on the PGA Tour with the majority of those victories coming on tough, classical layouts like Riviera, Augusta National, and Torrey Pines. This week's Quail Hollow behemoth falls into the mold for me, which makes a Watson with trending form worth a GPP stab.

Rickie Fowler ($9,500)

The course history is amazing - Fowler's first PGA Tour win came at Quail Hollow & he posted top-five finishes as recently as the 2017 PGA Championship and 2019 Wells Fargo - and the recent form is...whatever the opposite of amazing is. That said, Rickie has shown teeny-tiny signs of life this year with three top-25s in 2021, including a T17 in his most recent start at Valero. If we're looking for positives, he grades out first in this Wells Fargo field in SG: Around The Green. Obviously, we're in "GPP Only" territory here, but maybe Fowler will get some good vibes on a layout where he's performed so well throughout his career.

Matthew NeSmith ($8,800)

Nothing fancy here, but Matthew NeSmith heads to Quail Hollow in solid form and offers some much-needed salary relief this week. He's made the cut in his last four starts, gaining strokes T2G in each. NeSmith also sticks out in an area that will be important this week, as he ranks fifth in this elite Wells Fargo field in SG: Par-5s over the last 24 rounds.

Adam Schenk ($7,900)

Iron play doesn't rank as high on the priority list at Quail Hollow as it does on many other layouts, but you can never go wrong with a player that's wielding hot irons. That's the case with our discount option of the week, Adam Schenk. Schenk heads to Carolina with white-hot Approach numbers. He's posted top-25 finishes in each of his last two starts, gaining 6.6 on Approach at the Heritage and 4.8 at Valspar.
