PGA DFS DraftKings Pivots: Sleepers and Value Picks - Genesis Invitational

Rob Giltner breaks down some DraftKings DFS pivots, value plays, and sleepers for the 2022 Genesis Invitational. Daily fantasy golf advice on under-owned golfers and who to avoid for your lineups.

Hello RotoBallers, my name is Rob Giltner and in this article, you will find my top PGA DFS Pivots for DraftKings and the Genesis Invitational. I am excited to join RotoBaller and assist in any way possible to help make us all some money in DFS!

Pivoting can be easily defined as shifting from a highly owned golfer to a less owned golfer at a similar price point. Pivoting helps create leverage in DFS. Leverage allows us to gain an advantage over the field in GPPs.  This Leverage increases our chances to win a tournament. In GPP DFS, we are competing with thousands of other entries. Pivoting and creating leverage helps separate ourselves from these other entries.

The separation allows us to maximize our chances of winning a GPP.  An example of this would be if golfer A is $9,000 and 30% owned, and golfer B is $8,900 and 10% -- we could pivot off golfer A and go to golfer B for the leverage. Genesis Invitational: DFS Lineup Pivots

Pivot Off Patrick Cantlay ($11,000) to Justin Thomas ($10,700)

Patrick Cantlay is currently projected to be one of the highest owned golfers in the field. That is a raise from being in the low teens last week. Cantlay has rattled off four straight top 10 finishes to start the year and finished in second place in Phoenix. While Cantlay has shown good results, how he has performed may not be sustainable. At Pebble Beach and The American Express, Cantlay lost strokes on approach. What saved him those weeks was his putter. His putter was hot again last week as he gained 5.4 strokes on the green. While Cantlay is a great putter, that club brings in a lot of variance for golfers. When rostering a high-owned golfer, it may be best to land on a golfer who has been hitting the ball consistently.

Justin Thomas was one of the best in the field in ball striking in Phoenix last week. Thomas gained 12.7 strokes tee-to-green, 3.3 strokes off-the-tee, and an excellent 7.1 stokes on approach. Unfortunately for Thomas, he lost almost three strokes putting. The good news for Thomas is Poa is his best putting surface, and he will see that this week. He also has a good history putting well at Riviera. In 2019, Thomas gained 6.2 strokes putting at this event. If Thomas’s ball-striking continues and improves his putting, he could make a great pivot off Cantlay.

Pivot Off Sung-Jae Im ($8,600) to Bubba Watson ($8,500)

Surprisingly, Sung-Jae Im is currently projected to be one of the highest owned golfers in the $8,000 range. While Im is an excellent ball-striker, he does not have good course history at this event. In two starts at Riviera, he has two missed cuts.  Im did have a nice showing at The Farmers Insurance Open finishing in sixth place. Im was hot with the putter in San Diego but lost strokes on approach. Based on his high ownership and course history it could be beneficial to pivot off Im.

Bubba Watson is somehow flying under the radar this week. The three-time champion of this event also arrives in good form. Watson has two top 15-place finishes in his last two worldwide starts. Last week in Phoenix, Watson gained 9 strokes tee-to-green and 7.7 strokes on approach. Watson’s current ownership projections are currently in the single digits. Based on his course history and current form, he makes for a great pivot.

Pivot Off Luke List ($7,400) to Alexander Noren ($7,500)

Luke List captured his first PGA Tour win at The Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego. His recent success could be the reason why he is projected to be one of the highest owned golfers in the $7,000 range. While List is one of the most consistent ball-strikers on tour, he is also one of the consistent worst putters. He gained 3.7 strokes putting in San Diego and it was only his second time gaining strokes putting in 12 starts. While ball-striking typically holds up over putting, rostering List at high ownership is a risky play.

Alexander Noren is currently projected to be in the low single digits ownership-wise. Noren is coming off a top 10 finish at WM Open in Phoenix last week. He did most of his damage on the green last week gaining 7.4 strokes putting. While he had a decent week ball striking, I would like to see more from him. However, he does have good course history at this event. Last year he finished in 12th place and gained 4.8 strokes tee-to-green. In his other two starts at The Genesis, Noren has not missed a cut. His low ownership sets him up for a nice pivot option.

Pivot Off Maverick McNealy ($7,200) to Adam Hadwin ($7,100)

Maverick McNealy is another $7,000 golfer who is gathering steam this week. We last saw McNealy disappoint as chalk at Pebble Beach. McNealy has not been hitting the ball well heading into this event. He has not gained a stroke on approach in his last two starts. He has only played this event once and that was a missed cut.

Adam Hadwin is one of my favorite plays on the slate. Hadwin has played this event seven times and has not missed a cut. He is seventh in the field in putting at Riviera Country Club and 10th in DraftKings points. Hadwin is also coming into this event in good form. Last week he gained 3.8 strokes tee-to-green and gained 6.9 strokes in the same metric at Pebble Beach. Hadwin makes for a great pivot play.
