Steven Cohen, the billionaire hedge fund manager of Point72 Asset Management, has entered exclusive negotiations to buy the New York Mets. Cohen had been close to a deal to acquire the Mets in late 2019 before the purchase fell apart. Although Cohen has not yet reached a definitive agreement to purchase the club, reports indicate that he is expected to do so within days. Once the deal is closed, the purchase agreement would give Cohen immediate control of the Mets to the delight of Mets fans. With the Wilpon ownership reign seemingly nearing the end of the line, Mets fans are cautiously optimistically that new ownership will have both the resources and immense desire to invest in top-tier free agent talent while also retaining expensive home grown talent.
